Hand sewn caps by based on portraits and extant caps.



"Elinor" is from a cap in the GCV collection. It is also supported by plate number 9 in "The Workwoman's Guide" figure 8, "young servant's neat day-cap. the one in GCV has more curved back sides than the one from Workwoman's guide.


"Fanny" is from this linen cap held at the MET. There is also something similar to it in both GCV's collection and "The Workwoman's Guide". Again, plate 9, figure 12, "Another Shape" The description goes on to say that "It answers well for a bonnet cap for ladies, in which case it might be made of net or tulle."
