Research in museum collections do show dresses as

from the 1830s to 1860s with matching pelerines. While the

pelerine itself changes shape during those four decades, the

idea of having an additional article of clothing for indoor

warmth remained. Without the companion belt with back

“floof”, it would have been a bit harder to date the pelerine as

its shape falls easily into the 1840s-1860s era. Waist belts, belts

with bows, and sashes became very popular mid 1860s, along

with the swallow tail bodices, and elliptical hoops. This is a

modest back “bow” emphasis as it does not drape very far, but

it could easily be adapted for a more lengthy and dramatic set

of tails.

FIT:

The Pelerine is worn over a dress and fit is through the

shoulder and neck. Sash is a graded pattern.

FABRIC:

The original fabrics are a light weight silk plaid and a

light weight brown glazed cotton. Sash has an additional canvas

for stiffening the waistband.

CHOOSING SIZE:

The Pelerine is ungraded but pattern contains information

on adjusting to fit an individual. The Sash waistband is

graded from 24” to 42 1/2”.
