HISTORICAL NOTES
This handsewn corded corset shows evidence of wear and repair. Thrift and practically guide many a repair, such as thread repairs or thread eyelets when bone ones are broken or gone. There are also several different fabrics used, indicating keeping and piecing of textiles from one project for another....nothing wasted.
From my research in handmade corsets from the 18th and 19th centuries, there are general trends but an amazing amount of variations recorded in the variety of the hand-made corsets. Each person has put their own sense of fashion and design into her own corset. You can follow the design in the layout or choose to create your own!
FIT:
This corded corset would have been worn over a shift and with a busk that had been curved to the shape of the wearer. It is comfortable to wear and move in with and without the busk. There are additional notes on how to adapt the pattern for the larger busted woman.
FABRIC:
The original fabric exterior is a cotton twill. The interior lining is plain woven cotton.
CORDING:
The cording is made from a narrow diameter string.
CHOOSING SIZE:
When deciding which size is correct for you to use, measure your rib cage under your bust and your waist, preferably with your underpinnings on. Instructions include various ways to alter the pattern to fit your individual measurements. Included are three sets of bust gussets. There is also an added hip gusset pattern piece in various sizes for those who are fuller hipped.
