Fig Leaf Patterns 227, Bib Front Dress, c. 1798-1805
This dress features the bib-front construction (a modern term: we do not know what it was called in the period). This refers to the way in which the "bib" or front panel of the bodice is attached to the front panel of the skirt. The front skirt panel is detached from the side panels to about hip level, allowing the wearer to step into the dress, put her arms through the sleeves, and pull up the front panel, buttoning the bodice near the shoulder. The ties sewn inside the dress at center back would come around to the front and be tied underneath the bodice front. The ties sewn on the exterior would come around to the front and be fastened outside the bodice. The ties for the front skirt could be tied underneath the dress or over the exterior. These ties are made from self fabric and not twill, suggesting the latter method. These smaller ties are hidden by the broader belt.

Original dress was made from roller printed cotton with a white linen. Silks, light weight wools, cottons, and linens are appropriate for this dress.
