107 Lined Jacket or Caraco from a private Collection
The owner of this garment calls her "Sleeping Beauty" or "Beauty", and indeed she is a wonderful garment with real presence. The original jacket or caraco was purchased from a Connecticut estate by Cora Ginsburg. More than likely the jacket was worn by a family member in that region. The fabric is European and has been dated to circa 1730s. This jacket was likely remade circa 1770s and later mended (reinforced) circa 1780. The brocade of the jacket is exquisitely matched and heavily pieced. It is so skillfully done as to be unobtrusive. The front of the jacket has all-in-one robings which are sewn down through the front and shoulder strap lining.
Jacket Lining: Without the amount of piecing as the self, the lining of the jacket body is made from four pieces and the sleeves are two piece with an additional cuff piece.
Sleeve Cuff Details: The last several inches on the cuff of both sleeves is heavily pieced, but not symmetrically.
FIT: The size 10 pattern is the original size. The bust measured on the lining is 37 3/4”. Waist measured at the top of the back slit is 29”. Center back neck to top of slit is 13”. Depending on the fabric used and how open or closed the center front is worn will determine ease and fit.
This jacket is designed to be worn over period stays. Without stays, the fit will be severely compromised. Adjustments to the shoulder and bust area allow contemporary wear.
