Virginia,
a striking Regency style, is the stove pipe poke
bonnet that dominated millinery for more than 25
years. When introduced around 1810, the
Virginia had a short raised crown and modest
brim that framed the face. As the decade
progressed, brims grew deeper and more flared
and the crown grew taller to accommodate
elaborate hairstyles. In the 1820's, the brim
flared widely at the cheek and flattened across
the front appearing much like a hat, but
maintaining the jut up in the back for the
decorative curtain. The early 1830's poke
bonnet returned to shapes similar to the late
teens with a round flared brim. |
